5 Key Reasons To Design The Life You Really Want

goal settingBy making the choice to design the life you really want, versus letting life just happen to you, you will experience some crucial benefits. Taking control of your life and going after the things that are really important to you can help you not only achieve your dreams but also learn new skills, find new opportunities, and let go of the fears that are holding you back. Here are the top five reasons you should start today to design the life you really want.

#1. You can learn to identify what makes you happy in life.

When you make the decision to design your life the way you want it to be, you have to understand what it is that makes you truly happy. When you get in touch with your strengths, your gifts, and what brings you joy and energizes you, you can use this knowledge to put yourself on a path toward something better.

Designing your life starts with an assessment of yourself, and you’ll gain untold new knowledge about what makes you happy in life and how that is likely to change over time.

#2. You can learn to appreciate failures and mistakes as learning opportunities.

When you design your own life, you learn that all the missteps and obstacles that you face in life are not setbacks or failures. They are, instead, opportunities to learn and grow. Being happy in life and achieving your goals is a process. It doesn’t all happen at once, and you don’t know everything you need to know right now to make it all come true in the future.

You have to learn, and learning is a process of trial and error, of making and learning from mistakes. Designing your life allows you the freedom to set your sights on a goal that makes you happy and be at peace with the process of learning and evolving that must happen in order for you to achieve that dream.

#3. You can find a fulfilling career. And then find a new one.

Designing your own life means you don’t have to be stuck in your current job and that you can reach for new aspirations at any point in your existence. The design process teaches you to imagine many different futures, all of which could make you happy, and to understand that finding work that energizes you and brings you joy and passion shouldn’t be a lofty goal that is unachievable.

Designing your life means you pick the one job that fulfills you today, and when that stops being your passion, you know you have the skills and mindset to find the next great opportunity.

#4. You can learn to navigate the biggest decision points in your life with ease.

Designing your life teaches you how to assess, make evaluations, envision multiple outcomes, and select among many different choices.

These are all essential life skills when it comes to not only designing your life but also making tough decisions along the way. Once you feel confident that your design process works and is bringing you happiness, you’ll start to see many ways these skills are transferable to all the decision-making points in your life.

#5. You can imagine multiple futures for yourself, then decide which to pursue.

Design is a process that involves choices and options. When you design the life you really want, you take the time to imagine multiple futures and varied pathways.

You see that several different options could bring you joy, and you are reminded that there is not one right future or path for you. Knowing this is freeing, allowing you to change directions in the future or start again when you find your passion and joy waning.

What to Do When You Feel Too Busy to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

healthy lifestyleMost of us know that living a healthy lifestyle isn't the easiest thing to do, and the sad truth is that many of us simply feel just too busy in life to implement any healthy changes. It's not necessarily that you don't have the motivation or you don't want to have a better lifestyle - it's simply that you don't feel you have the time to make the required changes in order to turn your lifestyle around (because, yes, it does take time and mental energy to make positive changes!)

Living a Healthy Lifestyle

But you CAN turn things around if you change your mindset and the way you're going about things. Here's how...

1) Make small changes

You don't have to completely revamp your lifestyle overnight. In fact, with your current work schedule and other things going on, you may never be able to achieve your ideal healthy lifestyle. It's important to remember that you don't have to become one of those people who goes to the gym at 5am every morning and manages to drink enough water throughout the day. Start with simple changes, such as eating a healthier breakfast or taking the stairs up to the office. Smaller really is better than nothing, honestly!

2) Find a buddy

Rather than trying to make a change on your own, find somebody to do it with you. This could be your partner, your best friend, a neighbor or the entire family. When you are all making healthy lifestyle changes together, it's not only easier to stick to it, but also to get the support that you need during tough times.

3) Remember it's not just about physical health

Living a healthy lifestyle isn't just all about losing weight, exercising more and eating better foods. It's also about your mental health, so you can think about ways in which to improve this too. Spend an hour just once a week after work to meditate, have a drink with some friends or even attend talking therapy sessions if you feel you have things to offload throughout the week. Still feel too busy? Well this is exactly why you need this time out. Everyone can prioritize 10 minutes a day for some quiet time, and you really must if you're feeling frazzled. The rest will follow.

4) If you don't succeed, try again!

Starting a new diet on Monday might seem like a great idea, but if you're feeling like giving up by the time you get to Wednesday, don't worry about it. Allow yourself time to ease into a healthier lifestyle, and be patient with yourself too. And, if you fall off the wagon, just put it behind you, get back up and start again. A healthy lifestyle is something that you should be able to keep for the rest of your life ... it's not a short term fix.

The Balancing Act of Self-Esteem

believe-in-yourselfHaving a healthy and balanced sense of self-esteem is a major key to living a healthy and happy life. There are two sides to every coin, however. Sometimes it can become something else - namely, an unbalanced ego. So how do you know if you are simply being confident, or if you are deceiving yourself?

Healthy Self-Esteem

A healthy self-esteem is one where you have the confidence to be honest with yourself, and love yourself no matter what. It encourages you to live your life to the fullest, make bold but good choices, and to keep going if and when mistakes are made.

Low Self-Esteem

An unhealthy self-esteem goes two ways. On the one hand, it can leave you with zero confidence as well as an often unrelenting fear of making mistakes, and often leads to a poor quality of life. This is typically called low self-esteem.

Over-Inflated Self-Esteem

On the other hand, an over-inflated self-esteem is also unhealthy. This is a form of self-deception that tricks you into thinking that you are better than everyone else and that you can do anything, even to the point of ostracizing your friends and family.

The Dangers of Unbalanced Self-Esteem

Either way, an unbalanced sense of self-esteem can lower your quality of life. People with low self-esteem often miss out on some of the best things that life has to offer. Either they are too afraid to make a mistake, or they feel that they are not worthy of happiness. It is a type of existence that only holds you back.

Relationships

An over-inflated sense of oneself puts you in danger of losing friends and close relationships. Outwardly, people with an over-inflated egos come off as cocky or mean. They tend to have trouble gaining and keeping close, loving relationships because they come off as being less than genuine.

Lying to Yourself

Typically, however, an inflated self-esteem is generally a sign of the exact opposite. Most people like this are hiding their true selves and are actually riddled with low self-confidence. The false mask of bravado is not true and this confidence is really just a form of self-deception.

Understanding the Meaning of Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is defined as confidence in your own self-worth, a sense of self-respect. You are not respecting yourself if you do not believe you are worthy of respect and happiness, nor are you respecting yourself by hiding behind an inflated ego.

Be Honest with Yourself

To truly find your own self-worth and build a true and balanced healthy self-esteem, you have to first be honest with yourself. Stop hiding behind fear or a false sense of confidence. Often, being honest with yourself is harder than being honest with an outside person.

Self-esteem is truly a balancing act that everyone has to work on. To build a healthy and balanced self-esteem you must first and foremost be honest with yourself. Only then can you start to work on your view of the world as a whole and make real changes that could change your life for the better.

Surround Yourself with Positive Affirmations

positive-thinkingMost of us have a lot of stress in our lives today. Some of it is due to the fast-paced society that we live in and some of it is self-inflicted due to who we choose to spend our time with. The fact is, misery loves company. If you want to live a positive and happy life, surround yourself with positive things and positive people. The more positive energy you manifest into the world, the more positive you’ll get back.

Set Specific Goals for Yourself

Whether it has to do with diet, exercise, or just having a positive mindset,  set realistic and specific goals that have a timetable so that you know when you’re supposed to be done with the goal. Write down the goal and the steps that you’ll take to reach the goal. Then add it to your calendar. Feeling accomplished will automatically make you feel more positive.

Nip Negative Self-Talk in the Bud

If you want to be more positive, start with yourself. When you feel your mind go toward negative self-talk, change it around to positive. Instead of, “I am fat,” change your words to, “I am healthy and I am eating right to make myself even healthier.” Even if it’s not immediately true, the more you tell yourself it’s true, the more you’ll seek to make the behavior match the feeling. It's almost like a self-fulling prophecy!

Listen to Happy Music

Find the most uplifting and positive music that you can find and put it on your play list. Try listening to happy music at least once a day. If you can figure out what time of day you are generally prone to negativity, try listening to that music before that time comes.

Read a Lot of Happy and Positive Books

There is no shortage of positive books to read in the library or on Kindle. There are even a lot of free inspirational books available. Keep your eyes open for the free offers; join a group on Facebook that helps you find positive free books to read on Kindle. Try to read one positive book each month.

Find Positive People to Make Your Friends

Remember that positive people generally want to hang around with other positive people. Therefore, if you want to meet more people who fit that description, you’ll need to focus your thoughts and actions more on the positive than the negative. Otherwise you’ll turn them off and they won’t want to be around you, which could backfire on your new positive world.

Practice Daily Affirmations

The character Stuart Smalley made fun of affirmations in his famous skits on Saturday Night Live but the truth is, it works. You can use the mirror self-talk or you can use a journal to write down five good and positive thoughts every single day to help you focus your thoughts in a positive direction.

Reorganize and Decorate Your Home

If you currently live in disorganization and clutter it can be very difficult to think positively. Try to work on one room at a time to redesign your life so that your surroundings are uncluttered and attractive. For organizational tips try visiting FlyLady.net which has many tips on how to get your home organized easily.

Surrounding yourself with positives is something that is very realistic and something that you can accomplish. Choose one thing at a time to work on, giving yourself a time limit on when you will accomplish adding every one of these positives to your life. You will be glad you did it.
